Overview

The Australian Society of Soil Science was established in 1957. Today the Society is an incorporated association with branches in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Riverina, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia. The Society’s Mission Statement is to promote the importance of soil in the Australian environment and the development of certified professional soil scientists and soil managers.

In 1996 the Australian Society of Soil Science Inc (ASSSI) and the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (AIAST) jointly developed the Standards for Professionals in Agriculture and Agri-Industry. In 2002 under the leadership of Prof. Robert E. White the Standards were modified for the Certified Professional Soil Scientist accreditation scheme. The first accreditation handbook and guidelines for CPSS were printed in 2003 and have been updated on a regular basis.

Soil science is a highly specialised field and CPSS recognises the educational qualifications and experience of a soil scientist.
